They are centres of life, spaces for encounters, expressions of style and identity. Where architecture meets emotion and materials become a message, Pyrolave Suisse is not far away. In four extraordinary projects - from the US West Coast to the North Sea - enamelled lava stone shows how design, function and craftsmanship merge into one.

Californian minimalism - lava at 7 metres

Los Altos, south of San Francisco - an area where modern architecture meets the Silicon Valley elite. In collaboration with BeckerStudio and the designer Jasper Bote, a kitchen was realised that is uncompromising - visually, technically and in terms of craftsmanship.

The centrepiece: a seven-metre-long kitchen block made of solid wood, steel and a continuous lava stone top in "Blanc de Chine".
